The USSR invaded Manchuria in 1945 in accordance with the Yalta Conference. The Soviet forces gained control of Japanese heavy weapons caches, which they then passed on to the CCP. This helped Lin Biao turn the PLA into a successful conventional army.
Fight in Manchuria: The GMD and CCP fought for control of Manchuria, and at first the GMD was winning. The Western allies supported the GMD and allowed GMD forces to reach Manchuria via western naval vessels.
The Americans brought Mao Zedong and Jiang Jieshi together for peace talks in Chongqing in 1946 but their commitment to a unified China was short lived and fighting quickly resumed.
