In chapter 8, the author goes back to a time in Berlin when Bruno's father becomes Commandant. The family goes to their grandmothers house and grandmother has some very different opinions than Father. She is on the side of the Jews, and she is deeply ashamed of her son. Without further argument, Bruno's grandmother asks the family to leave, even though she does not want to. This creates a sort of problem because Father doesn't want to dissapoint his mother, but in his eyes, he simply has a different opinion.
