In the 6th chapter, Bruno starts talking to the maid, Maria, for the first time. He learns all about her past, and her family. Bruno starts to think of Maria as a person, and not just a person who works for them, which really touches Maria. She decides to tell him how she got a job working for their family. Bruno's father was a kind man once upon a time, and while Maria was struggling, he decided to help her and give her a job, which she really appreciated. This makes Bruno very happy, getting to hear about a time when his father was a kind man who had others in his mind always. It changes Bruno's mind about who he thinks his father is as a person.
