In this chapter, Bruno is talking to Gretel about how he doesn't like Out-With. Gretel, who tries to act a lot more mature than Bruno, says she loves it there, and is getting by great. Bruno doesn't believe her, and continues to go on and on, eventually mentioning the other children he saw. Gretel, who is also lonely, questions Bruno, and they both end up watching the children, who aren't all children. Some are men, some grandfathers, and some babies, but no women, which adds to the confusion. Together, Bruno and Gretel watch the people to try and guess why they are there, but still not saying anything to the adults.
