16 nov 1885 anni - Louis Riel's Trial
Descrizione:
Riel was tried for treason. English-French tensions exploded across the country. People of the British background -the "English"-wanted Riel to be dealt with harshly. The Majority of the people in Quebec -the "French" -wanted him to be regarded as a hero because he had defended Roman Catholic and French Language Rights.
John A. MacDonald did not try to find a middle ground. When Riel was convicted of Treason, MacDonald allowed the death sentence to be carried out. This infuriated the French. Support for the Conservative party in Quebec plummeted.
