To everyone's surprise, Brenna's plan involves only a startling twelve warriors: one Mage and one Faber take down the magic, six guide prisoners out, and the other four are waiting with the horsedrawn wagons. She promises that it will work, as the prison is mainly self-ordained by magic. No men die. All 34 men who hadn't been initially killed are returned home, and most of the bodies are as well. It is declared a successful mission, and Gregor tells Brenna that she has been cleared of her dues towards him. It is only after that Brenna realizes that the date is what would have been Katie's sixteenth birthday.
