Robert Gagne formulated “Nine Events of Instruction” which was one of the first attempts to classify types of learning outcomes and the conditions necessary to teach. He also outlined five types of learning outcomes, which each required different conditions to promote learning and developed a hierarchical structure for intellectual skills. His philosophy of learning affected the field because it emphasized that before a skill can be learned subordinate skills must be mastered.
