On July 7, 1777, the Battle of Hubbardton became the only battle of the American Revolution to be fought in Vermont. After recapturing Fort Ticonderoga in upstate New York, British General John Burgoyne pursued the retreating Americans under Colonels Seth Warner and Ebenezer Francis. Burgoyne’s army caught up with them at Hubbardton, Vermont, where the Americans fought a skilled rear guard action before escaping. Although the battle ended in a British tactical victory, it was also a strategic victory for the Americans, most of whom escaped to fight another day.
