Descrizione:

An attack launched by Japanese forces in retaliation from Chinese aggression near the Marco Polo Bridge outside of Beijing.

Importance to Japanese expansion: The attack allowed Japan to pave the path for a full-scale war against China. This incident also put pressure and allowed the more tough military leaders of the Japanese armed forces to push for war. Divides in the Japanese military took place as War Minister Sugiyama Hajime favored sending additional troops while General Kanji Ishiwara feared conflict in China would provoke the USSR.

International Response: The invasion by the Japanese Army faced and created international consequences. This invasions increased the growing anti-Japanese sentiments already brewing in China; thus, raising the historical tension between both nations. It can also be argued that the Marco Polo Bridge Incident set Japan onto the path towards the Second World War by increasing Japanese greed and need for land. The United States reacted to this incident with President Roosevelts ‘Quarantine Speech’ in October of 1937, which stated that the US would defend aid any nation under attack from another aggressive nation.
