Voltaire was one of the figureheads of the enlightenment and represented the changing times through his use of reason and his arguments towards organised religion and state power. This makes his banishment from his nation a sign of both the resistance to change that France had developed and the power that the groups he criticized had as they were able to arrest and prosecute such an influential figure. This moment also sparked changes in his thinking through meeting figures like Shakespeare or Isaac Newton and as a way for Voltaire's ideas to spread to leaders like Frederick II of Prussia.
