1 gen 1214 anni - The Barons’ Revolt

Descrizione:

Year: 1215
Country: England
Political/Government System: Monarchy – King John
Method of Protest: Civil War
King John is often thought of as one of the worst kings in English history. He frittered away England’s money in many failed military conquests and also used it to finance his own extravagant expenses. To avoid making the country bankrupt, John imposed heavy taxes on the Barons of England, made them pay unnecessary fines and also seized their properties.
A group of dissatisfied barons set out to challenge the king’s selfish rule in May of 1215. The group took London a few days later and forced the king to discuss a bill of rights. The result of this discussion was the Magna Carta which was signed on the 15th of June. The Magna Carta states that all people are subject to the law, including the king. It also states that everyone has the right to a fair and honest trial.
By rebelling against the king and standing up for their rights and freedoms, these barons helped shape our modern bill of human rights and took unnecessary power away from the monarchy.
