The Battle of Midway was a military engagement between the U.S. and the Japanese in the Pacific. The Japanese were trying to launch a surprise attack against the U.S. Navy at Midway in order to destroy the remaining U.S. aircraft carriers. Before that the American intelligence was intercepting Japanese communications that indicated that an operation was going to take place in Midway. The U.S. intelligence broke the Japanese code without the them finding out about it. That allowed the U.S. forces to launch a surprise attack of their own. This was significant because the Japanese and American forces were in a deadlock and this battle struck a decisive blow to the Japanese forces in the Pacific, giving the advantage to the American fleet in the Pacific for the first time in the war. It also allowed the Americans to send more support to the British fighting on the Western Front. That also allowed the Allies in Europe to push back the German and squeeze them in a pincer movement with the Russians on the Eastern Front.
