The rape/murder lead long-simmering tensions between the Buddhist Rakhine and Muslim communities to flare in Rakhine state the following month. most of the violence centred around the Northern part of the state and around the provincial capital of Sittwe. 98 people killed, 12 injured from both communities. 5,338 homes destroyed and some 75,000 people were displaced (mostly Rohingya) .
