Leif Erikson was born in Iceland and in his early life his father and his family had set out on an expedition to Greenland where Leif would spend most of his childhood. Leif later learned of a land far west from another Icelander named Bjarni Herjólfsson who had seen the land but had not landed ashore. Leif and a crew of 35 men set out for this unknown land and landed ashore and named the land Helluland or Land of Flat Rocks. Setting sail again they traveled south and saw miles of forest, naming it Markland or Land or Forests. They had later sailed south again and named the new area Vinland. They had set camp and spent the winter there, exploring the area. Once spring came the set back to Greenland and told of their discoveries. It is believed they had landed in modern-day Newfoundland due to remnants of a Viking settlement being discovered in the 1960s.
