Fidel Castro, with an army of 138 men, launched an attack on the Moncada Barracks. The attack began at dawn as an attempt to surprise the federal soldiers working at the time. Nineteen federal soldiers were killed and all of Castro's rebels were taken, being only Fidel and Raul Castro escaping.
