A major diplomatic agreement signed in Helsinki, Finland, to reduce tension between the Soviet Union and Western blocs by confirming and securing the following of the former status quo in Europe following WWII. The accords were signed by all the countries of Europe, with the exception of Albania, the United States and Canada. The agreement also pledged the nations to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms and to cooperate in various areas such as economic and humanitarian areas. The Helsinki Accords are non-binding and do not have treaty status.
