-Caused by Mycobacterium leprea
-Bacteria identified by Norwegian scientist in 1873
-Humans and armadillos are only known natural hosts

-2 types of leprosy
-Tuberculoid leprosy and lepromatous leprosy
-Multi-drug treatment established in 1982 and reduces the cases and has dropped by 97% since then.
