jan 1, 1894 - Lithium first used in the treatment of melancholic depression by psychiatrist Frederik Lange
Description:
In 1894, Danish psychiatrist Frederik Lange made explicit reference to lithium in the treatment of melancholic depression, ultimately treating 35 patients with lithium carbonate (12; see reference to F. Lange). (Frederik’s older brother Carl, Professor of Pathology in Copenhagen, is often associated with the introduction of lithium in Denmark in the mid-1880s, yet Carl wrote little about it).
