Description: Japan believed that they could destroy America's naval fleet if they attacked Pearl Harbor. When they did attack most of the ships there were sunk, but the most important ships, aircraft carriers were not in Pearl Harbor. The attack resulted in America joining the war. The president of America at the time was Franklin D. Roosevelt and he made a speech in which he said December 7, 1941, was "A date which will live in infamy"
Significance: America entered the war on the side of the Allies.
