Description:
The three main camps of Auschwitz, Birkenau, and Monowitz were liberated by Soviet forces on January 27th, 1945. In mid-January, the Red Army began approaching the camp complex which caused the SS to evacuate around 60,000 prisoners and make them march west. Before the evacuation, thousands were killed inside of the camps. When the Soviets arrived, they liberated around 7,000 prisoners in which the majority were either sick or dying.
