Major Event 1: On April 14, the historic Human Genome Project, which was started in 1990, finally got completed. 99% of the human genome was now sequenced, and scientists hoped that this information could be used in the future for disease prediction and treatment. The announcement was made by the National Human Genome Research Project (NHGRI) and the Department of Energy (DOE).
