may 14, 1567 - Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643)

Description:

Monteverdi, born in northern Italy, stood out among his contemporaries as the most innovative and imaginative composer of his day, a distinction that caused his music to be attacked in public as too radical. His genius lay on creating vocal works, such as madrigals, operas, and sacred pieces. In 1601, Monteverdi was appointed court music director by the duke in Mantua, where he wrote his famous opera L'Orfeo (1607). After a new duke dismissed Monteverdi in 1612, he became maestro di cappella at Saint Mark's in Venice, the post prestigious musical post in Italy. Although becoming a priest in 1632, Monteverdi reserved a special place in his work for the madrigal, publishing no fewer that 250 in nine collections over five decades.
