apr 5, 1817 - Opening of American School for the Deaf
Description:
Thomas Gallaudet, hearing, met Laurent Clerc, deaf, in France. Gallaudet brought Clerc back to America so that they could educate the deaf. With funding from Mason Cogswell, they opened the American School for the Deaf. ASL was developed there. At ASD they only used sign language to teach. Clerc was the teacher and he preferred to use sign. This is the manual method of teaching.
