This is interesting, as another high school classmate had a short wave radio and we had just hooked up a large antenea, and tuned to some frantic Morse code, with ... --- ... repeated a lot. They gave lat and long and we reported it to the navy in Virginia Beach. My great uncle was commander of the Atlantic Fleet at that point.
We saw the Thresher news the next day. And the lat/long matched.
