As armed conflict between bands American colonists and British soldiers by the following summer, with the Revolution War in full swing, the movement for independence from Britain had grown. 5 delegates of the Continental Congress including Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin had to draft a formal statement of the colonies’ intentions.The Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence–written mostly by Jefferson–in Philadelphia on July 4, which is now celebrated as the birth of American independence.
