The Roanoke Colony, also known as the Lost Colony, was established in 1585 on Roanoke Island in what is today's Dare County, North Carolina. It was a late 16th-century attempt by Queen Elizabeth I to establish a permanent English settlement in North America. The colony was founded by Sir Walter Raleigh.Colonists arrive in Roanoke, Virginia.
The Dares used to live in the colony. Approximately 120 settlers left England on May 8, 1587. They were supposed to settle on Chesapeake Bay area but the captain landed them on Roanoke Island. Virginia’s grandfather left the colony for England as Roanoke’s agent nine days after her birth.
