The first attempt by Queen Elizabeth to establish a permanent colony in America. The colony was founded Sir Walter Raleigh, an explorer. The enterprise was originally financed and organized by Sir Humphrey Gilbert. Although Gilbert had drowned returning from a trip to a fishing settlement, his half brother gained the rights to the charter his late brother had obtained. The half brother, or Sir Walter Raleigh, had been tasked to make a profit, explore the land, and establish a base in order to raid Spain's ships. The colony would fight in small battles against the Native Americans but nothing that the Settlers couldn't repel. Finally the settlement was destroyed as a result of conflict with the Natives. A new group would be dispatched and would mysteriously disappear during the Anglo-Spanish war. It is not known what happened to the Settlers, although there are multiple theories of the disapearence.
