dec 20, 1860 - Battle of Fort Sumter
Description:
The Battle of Fort Sumter was the site of the opening engagement of the Civil War. Fort Sumter, located in Charleston, South Carolina, was one of the two forts in the South still under Union control. When General Beauregard learned Lincoln was planning to send supplies for reinforcement to the fort, he demanded a surrender. When this surrender was refused, the Confederated bombarded it. This was significant because it marked the first of many battles which would be fought during the Civil War. It also influenced the Civil War by officially beginning it seeing as the next morning following the Battle of Fort Sumter, Congress declared war.
