oct 4, 218 BC - 218 BC - Hannibal's army crosses Alps
Description:
o Knowing Scipio on his tail and blocking the Heraclean way via the river Durance and Mont Genevre, Hannibal approaches Alps with speed and more to the north
o In territory of Allabroges, Hannibal is provided guides and supplies after adjudicating a dispute between to two royal brothers over who should rule
Hes given Hannibal two children he claims to be his two sons as hostages
o same Allobroges try to lay ambush for army in the passes,
Hannibal learns of this, obvious place for ambush, would be surprised if there wasn’t one so sends contingent up behind ledge waiting for ambush to flank them the second they appear
Of course they appear, but Mago leads charge to ambush the ambushers pushing them off the ledges
Hannibal then raids village’s winter stores
o Hannibal will act as if it is some feat that had never before been accomplished though several celtic armies had accomplished it, even recently
Hannibal will dismiss it as a rabble, not an army
Rome will style it as just a marker of a barbarian, like bugs crawling out of the mountains
