mar 3, 1865 - Freedmen's Bureau

Description:

The Freedmen's Bureau was established by Abraham Lincoln and was intended to last for a year after the Civil War. The Freedmen's Bureau was created to help struggling freedmen and their families in the south. The Bureau supplied shelter, education, food, assistance in finding jobs and planting plantations. This agency also encouraged the ideas of whites and blacks working together instead of one working under the other. The tasks of the agency became very difficult when black codes were established, it was basically recreating slavery. The agency weakened even further after the rise of the Ku Klux Klan and was finally shut down after Congress failed to renew it. The Freedmen's Bureau is important because it fed millions of former slaves, built hospitals, negotiated labor contracts, helped ex slaves find family, educated many and did much more. It helped to guide former slaves into a free life.
