Description:
In Philadelphia of 1774, a group of Quakers, led by James Pemberton, organized the first anti-slavery society. Around 1785, Benjamin Franklin assumed the position of the organization's president. He took the matter of slavery to the Constitutional Convention of 1787. He later petitioned in 1790 to ban slavery. The society was revived in 1984, and is currently focused on racism, improve issues of the criminal justice, and overall be a representation for African Americans receiving harsh sentences, being prisoners, and their economic impact.
