Royalist plotters positioned a horse and wagon loaded with a barrel of gunpowder and shrapnel on the Rue Saint-Nicaise and lit the fuse as Napoleon's carriage came near. He would've died except the carriage was going so fast that the barrel exploded seconds after he passed
