may 22, 1850 - Harriet Tubman
Description:
Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist, humanitarian, and an armed scout and spy for the United States Army during the American Civil War. One famous escaped slave, Harriet Tubman, made nineteen dangerous trips back into slave territory, helping slaves escape on the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses. She told them, "be free or die." The thing that didn't help her was the Fugitive Slave Act because it allowed slave owners to recapture their slaves that had escaped. Some whites also helped the slaves, they mostly did this because they hated the rich plantation owners.
