Soviets had resisted a German invasion on Stalingrad once earlier in the war due to the winter and stubborn soviets, however Hitler wanted to try again.
But, as expected, after a 199 day battle, the German army had to surrender, losing 108,000 troops to the soviets, Both sides lost 2 million soldiers. This decision by Hitler led to his downfall as he lost so many troops and was backed up into Berlin due to this attack.
