The annuities were paid late, and the Dakota’s were getting very hungry and poor. The traders would refuse to let the Dakota people buy food and resources for free. Then on August 17 four Dakota men killed five settlers. In the morning of August 18 Dakota warriors went to war killing hundreds of settlers, traders and government employees. But some Dakota people did not want to go to war.
