On July 1st 1968, Health Care became publicly funded thanks to Thomas Douglas and his Medicare plan. Before the Medicare plan was put into place, Canadians would have to pay steep prices whenever they would visit the Doctors that many people could not afford. Thomas (Tommy) Douglass, a member of parliament, wanted to allow all people access to the medical care they needed. The medicare plan made Health Care paid through taxes so that Canadians wouldn't have to worry about having to pay every time they needed to go to the doctors.By 1962 every person in Saskatchewan was covered by the Medicare plan and by 1968 it became Canada wide. The Medicare plan is still in effect today and has continues to greatly benefit Canadians.
