jan 1, 1662 - Last Sighting of a Dodo

Description:

Sitting in the Indian Ocean, the island of Mauritius was home to a particular bird known as the dodo.

European explorers first encountered this island, and thus the dodo in 1598. Over the next century, however, these humans managed the hunt the bird completely to extinction with the last credible sighting ever recorded in 1662.

Ever since then, the significance of the dodo grew throughout the human consciousness becoming one of, if not the, most well-known extinct animals in history.

It's image has gone on to become a symbol of extinction and obsoleteness in today's literature, language, and pop culture.
