Description:

Of the hundreds of Dakota people who were surrendered of captured during the war, 303 men are tried in a military court and convicted of harming and killing civilians. At the urge of Henry Whipple ( a missionary ) Abraham Lincoln “reviews the convictions and commutes the sentences” of 264 prisoners. He signs the order instructing 39 men to death by hanging. One prisoner was spared of his sentence just before the sentencing was carried out. The lasting 38 men are hung in Mankato on December 26, 1862. It was the largest mass execution in U.S history.
