Description:

Suicide of Hitler and fall of Berlin
In the last hours of the battle of Berlin, on the afternoon of April 30, 1945, the German Chancellor Adolf Hitler committed suicide in his bunker of the Reich Chancellery in Berlin with Eva Braun, understanding that the war was already lost for the Third Reich and wishing not to be captured by the Soviet troops advancing on the German capital.

In his last testament, Hitler appointed his successors: Admiral Karl Dönitz as the new Reichspräsident (President of Germany) and Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels as the new Reichskanzler. However, Goebbels committed suicide with his wife in Berlin on the morning of May 1, leaving Admiral Dönitz to orchestrate the surrender negotiations.

On April 30 Admiral Dönitz was not in Berlin but in Plön, from where he would move to form his new government to the small port of Flensburg, near the Danish border on the Baltic, where he had installed the last barracks General of the German Navy. Aware of the death of Hitler, Dönitz appointed the diplomat Schwerin von Krosigk as the new Reichskanzler, with authority over the areas of Germany where allies or Soviets had not yet entered.
