Calvin cleaned up the mess that Harding had previously left. This was the reason that he won the 1924 election. He worked with the treasury secretary to reduce federal spending, the national debt, and taxes. During his time as president, the years were peaceful and prosperous. This one time, Collidge vetoed a bill that would provide a bouns to WWI veterans. However, Congress overrode the veto.
