The October Revolution in 1917 consisted of competing groups who were struggling for power. For example the Red Army was led by Trotsky, this was communist vs socialist or social democrats. The Russian civil went on for three years and during that time many groups were formed that opposed the Bolshevik political group. The other groups were known as the Whites while the Bolsheviks were known as the Reds.
