16h 48min, dec 31, 1903 y - War with Japan
Description:
After Russia rejected Japan's plan for splitting Manchuria and Korea into areas of control, Japan retaliated with a surprise attack against one of Russia's naval bases in China, Port Arthur. The Russian fleet at the base was destroyed, and in the battles that followed, lost again and again to Japan. Finally, Russia realized that they were not able to stop Japan from expanding into East Asia, and so in August of 1905 a peace treaty was signed in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Russia's loss helped kick-start the Revolution later that year.
