may 26, 1940 - Dunkirk:
May 26 - June 4, 1940
Description:
Countries Involved:
France
Britain
Germany
Importance:
This is considered the turning point of World War II. Because the larger military ships could not get into the shallow bay area to save the troops, many smaller boats, such as ferries, took troops back to Britain. This served as great war propaganda to rally the allies together with a sense of community.
Outcome:
Even though the Allies were able to evacuate about 85% of the troops that were stranded, it was still a German Victory. The troops that didn't escape were either killed or taken as prisoners of war.
