Description:
Following the Battle of Bull Run, captured Union prisoners were sent to Libby Prison. Nearing the end of 1863, Union men started planning an escape. The plan was simple - to dig a tunnel through the basement and into a warehouse on the east side. The digging took a total of 38 days, and 109 men managed to crawl through this and escape. Over 12 hours had passed before any action was taken towards the missing prisoners.
