Astronomers such as Camille Flammarion believed they had found signs of life on Mars in the form of spectroscopic signatures of water. Wealthy Harvard graduate and well-connected socialite, Percival Lowell claimed to see artificial canals on the surface of Mars, and founded an observatory to view these perplexing canals. The public quickly latched on to this perplexing discovery because it gave hope for life on Mars and fed into Sci-Fi fantasies.
