The Mexican War brought on more westward expansion and more tension over slavery. This led to a compromise of four parts. California would be a free state, slave trade would become illegal in Washington D.C, the fugitive law was passed, and the rest of the land gained from the war would would be decided on if there was going to be slavery there or not through popular sovereignty. This is known as the Compromise of 1850.
