Dryden accidentally kills himself whilst joining with a phoenix. Most expect he was assassinated by followers of Titus. Dryden's household found the child in the house.
Alton assumes that the attempt to bind hismelf with a phoenix simply killed him. For the time he is unaware of Caleb.
