On December 20, 1860. By February 1861, six other states of the lower South—Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas had seceded. The states that seceded set up a new government, the Confederate States of America, or the Confederacy, and made Jefferson Davis president.
