The Compromise of 1850 established California as a free state. And it made the slave trade illegal in Washington D.C. All other land gained from the Mexican War (Utah and New Mexico) would be able to decide if they wanted to be for or against slavery in their territory. And a result was that a New Fugitive Law was passed, which affected the whole country.
