The Compromise of 1850 said that Calinfornia woul dbe a free state and slave trade would be illegal in Washington D.C. Also, the rest of the land gained from the Mexican war would decide if they wanted slavery in their territory or not by voting. Can't foget about how a new fugitive slaves law was passed.
